Lovecraft Catalyst x Isamu Crafty Dan

Family tree

16/08/2016: 14 babies, day 22 of the gestation period (+ one stillborn baby buck).

This litter is very much thanks to Jemma at Isamu for which I'm eternally grateful (and generally for the way we work so closely together - we're a great team!). Cat was born in my Eltons litter and went to live with Jemma, who very kindly and generously let her come back here post-virus to help with the next generation. Cat is an extremely gentle and kind girl, easy-going and relaxed - she is one of the steadiest rats I've ever had, never overreacts to anything and is such a completely pleasant and fun girl to have in a group. She submits easily and enjoys playing with younger rats, including getting tumbled by them, although she will make it clear when enough is enough. She is a large doe with lovely type which has earned her a couple of NFRS variety stars.

Dan was born at Jemma's last August to two of my rats, Moo (from the Maloads litter) and Zac (from the Talaneys). Dan was nicknamed Tippy in the nest, as he is missing the tip of his tail, and he came to live here with his brother Wit. During the sendai outbreak this summer, I lost five of my six bucks, and Dan was the lone survivor. Because of all the stress he was put under during the virus, and with everyone in his group dying (including his brother, and his alpha) he went through a couple of weeks of being stressed and unhappy. When he eventually got company in the form of two little nephews, he had some issues settling with the babies, but is now a tolerant albeit reluctant alpha. Dan can get stressed fairly easily; something I would normally steer away from in my selections, but in this case I feel that Cat is well able to carry his slight edge, plus that as he has been through much more than most bucks would ever have to deal with, it is not that meaningful to assess him based on such extraordinary circumstances. Although Dan caught the virus and was fairly ill, he recovered very well (compared to his five cagemates who all died) so this was a contributing factor when selecting him to sire this litter, in terms of working on improving health. He is a big studly buck with a beautiful head and lovely eyes, very people-oriented and kind. He has always been an utter sweetheart with people and takes comfort and confidence from me, and he used to thrive in his old group and clearly felt happy and settled under a strong alpha.

I'm hoping kittens will be large and robust like their parents, with good type and bold engaging temperament. We will definitely get agouti in Essex and unmarked, and if Dan carries self we'll also get black. Cat has a good chance of carrying dumbo, and with Dan having a small white chest marking, we may see some rather freestyle markings when it combines with the Essex.

I plan to keep two does, with the remaining babies being homed to my waiting list. If you are interested in going on the list for future litters, please see the Homing page for more information.
